Makhana, also referred to as prickly water lily seeds, popped lotus seeds, foxnuts, or gorgon nuts, is making a comeback as a traditional Indian snack. Revered for its health benefits, this nutrient-rich food is gaining global recognition for its valuable properties.
These small, nutrient-dense morsels are being hailed as a new superfood, packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Makhana is rich in magnesium, iron, potassium, and calcium, making it an excellent choice for a growing baby. It’s one of the healthiest food options and can be introduced to your baby's diet anytime after they turn six months old.
What Nutrients Does Makhana Contain and Why Is It Beneficial for Babies?
Makhana is packed with a diverse range of nutrients essential for supporting a strong immune system and offering numerous health benefits. In 100 grams of popped lotus seeds (Makhana), you'll find approximately 350 calories, including around 77 grams of carbohydrates, 9.7 grams of protein—crucial for your baby's growth—and just 0.1 grams of fat. The remainder consists of water, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, and calcium.
Makhana is rich in fiber, which aids in maintaining a healthy digestive system and ensures smooth bowel movements, preventing constipation. It also helps eliminate excess water and sodium from the body and can alleviate muscle contractions that may cause cramps. The thiamine in lotus seeds supports healthy nerve function and cognitive development, while fox nuts promote the production of acetylcholine, necessary for effective neurotransmission. Additionally, Makhana is gluten-free, making it a great option for children with gluten intolerance.
When Is the Right Time to Introduce Makhana to Babies?
Makhana can be introduced to babies starting at 6 months of age. After you've already introduced rice and other cereals into their diet, you can begin with a small amount in powdered form. Start with 1 tablespoon of makhana porridge and monitor your baby for any allergic reactions. Observe for three days, and if no adverse reactions occur, you can gradually increase the quantity.
